The Twelve Oaks

Because of our busy schedules, Ed and I make it a point to plan weekend trips every few months. Regardless of the fact that we live and work together, sometimes it’s hard to disconnect and just enjoy each other. When we started planning this mini vacation, we wanted to find a cozy bed and breakfast in a city that neither of us had ever visited, and one that was an easy drive from Charlotte. After a little research, we discovered The Twelve Oaks and made our decision at that very moment.

My initial thought when we drove through the town of Covington and up to this gorgeous antebellum home was, “There’s no way this place actually exists. I can’t believe we’re staying here.” The pictures don’t do it justice.

On the way up to our room, we passed these beauties. These may look familiar if you’re a fan of Gone With the Wind and Scarlett O’Hara! This bed and breakfast is actually the real home that inspired set designers to create Twelve Oaks in the movie. There are a lot of films and shows that were filmed here, one of the most popular being The Vampire Diaries.

We stayed in the Steel Magnolia’s Spa Grand Suite and I was completely blown away by how elegant yet cozy it was. The tub was definitely my favorite part and made the perfect end to a full day of shopping and exploring the quaint downtown of Covington. (Also, Twelve Oaks is only a 30 minute drive from Atlanta!) Honestly, each room and bathroom were equally as beautiful and gave me so much home inspiration. I’m thinking I need my own claw tub!

One of my favorite things about Twelve Oaks was that we could be as social or as secluded as we wanted. Every afternoon, the owners host a happy hour where you can mingle with other guests or find a cozy spot on the porch to enjoy a glass of wine. The same goes for breakfast. We could eat together or with other guests at the large dining table, which is perfect for events and holidays.

The one thing I’ll remember forever about staying here was the people. The owners, John and Nicole, and their staff were incredible and really made our stay memorable. Fun fact: John and Nicole created the delicious breakfast menu AND make it in-house, which is not something I’ve experienced. We had biscuits and gravy on the first morning and red velvet pancakes for Valentine’s Day! On our last day, Nicole shared stories with us about the long history of the home, long before she transformed it into a bed and breakfast with her husband, and the amazing memories they built there. Ed and I certainly created our own as well, and I’m already looking forward to staying again. If you’re looking for the perfect romantic weekend trip, and as an added bonus, you can take amazing photos there, this is it!
