Wedding season is upon us! It’s such a fun time of year, especially when you’re celebrating people you really care about. Two of my dear college friends are getting married in May and the majority of the bridesmaids and groomsmen have been able to watch their relationship grow since the very beginning, making the celebration even more meaningful.

There’s so much excitement around this time of year, it makes it all the more fun to choose outfits for these very special occasions. However, I’ve definitely made a mistake or two when it comes to dress choice over the years. I would buy something pretty but not necessarily functional. Now, I basically go through a mental checklist every time I’m choosing a wedding guest outfit.

  1. A dress I can dance in is a definite must, which is why I tend to stay away from body-con styles.
  2. Something breezy – I went to an outdoor wedding last year and wore a dress that I didn’t realize showed sweat marks (Ew I know, big mistake) so now I gravitate towards options with an open back, flared skirt, or light material that I can breathe in.
  3. A low-maintenance dress – Not something I’m going to have to keep adjusting. I stay away from wrap dresses, plunging necklines, and basically anything I’ll have to wear fashion tape with.
  4. Something I’ll wear more than once. I think all women are at least a little guilty of this! I have one too many dresses hanging in my closet that I’ve literally worn to one wedding and haven’t touched since. Now I’m at the point where I can’t justify buying a dress if I won’t wear it in the future, no matter how pretty it is!

This Necessary Clothing midi is my ideal wedding guest dress. I love the open back and floral detail. Plus, the fit and flare style makes it super comfortable and functional! Here are a few of my favorite wedding guest picks:
